Overview
Venetian plaster, lime wash, and Tadelakt are all lime-based finishes, but they produce very different looks and serve different purposes: Venetian plaster is the polished, marble-like finish; lime wash is a soft, matte, weathered look; and Tadelakt is a waterproof polished plaster for wet areas. Understanding the differences helps you choose the right one for each space. For a deeper look at the material itself, see our guide to what Venetian plaster is.
Venetian Plaster
This is the finish most people picture: smooth, polished, and deep, with a subtle sheen and a stone-like richness. Applied in thin troweled coats and burnished, it suits feature walls, entries, and formal spaces where you want luxury and depth. It is the most refined and polished member of the lime family.

Lime Wash
Lime wash is thinner and more matte, producing a soft, chalky, weathered look with gentle color variation. It has a relaxed, old-world character, well suited to a more rustic or European aesthetic. Where Venetian plaster is polished and formal, lime wash is soft and casual. It is also breathable and lime-based, sharing the same climate benefits.
Tadelakt
Tadelakt is the waterproof one. A traditional Moroccan lime plaster, it is burnished with a stone and treated with natural soap to become genuinely water-resistant, making it the finish of choice for showers, tub surrounds, and other wet areas. It gives a seamless, jointless, stone-like surface with no grout lines. It is the most technical of the three to apply and the most specialized. For a deeper dive into how it performs in wet spaces, see our guide on whether Venetian plaster is waterproof.
Other Lime and Specialty Finishes
Beyond these three, there are related finishes and custom textures a skilled plaster craftsman can produce, from smooth modern surfaces to heavily textured rustic ones. The lime family is broad, and part of the value of working with a specialist is matching the exact finish to your vision and your space. Which Finish for Which Room
In short: Venetian plaster for polished feature walls and formal spaces, lime wash for soft rustic character, and Tadelakt for anything that meets water. A single home might use all three in different rooms. Knowing which belongs where, and applying each correctly, is the craft, and it is exactly what we do across the Flathead Valley.
The Bottom Line
Venetian plaster for polished luxury. Lime wash for soft, rustic character. Tadelakt for waterproof wet areas. A single home might use all three — knowing which belongs where is the craft.
